EDGE Memory DiskGo! USB Flash Drive

Peripheral DiskGo! USB Flash Drive

There are many ways to carry your files back and forth with you wherever you go. To have a PDA or laptop is great, however even a PDA might be big for some of us. The EDGE Memory DiskGo! USB Flash Drive really packs the punch when it comes to carrying around your data. It runs about three inches long and a mere three quarter of an inch thick. That's what I call portable!

The USB Flash Drive is summed up in those few words: USB Flash Drive. There is a detachable cover which is used to expose the USB plug. The cover has a metal clip on it that can be used for putting the device on your shirt or belt, however I found that the device fits most comfortable in my pocket. The clip felt a little plasticy and cheap to me, but it does its job of clipping to your clothing. Throughout my use of the unit, I constantly had the feeling that the clip was just going to pop off. It didn't, but it still feels very flimsy. There is a little loophole on the bottom of the drive that can be used to fit a carrying string through. The drive weighs close to nothing, so you will barely feel it when it sits in your pocket.

Once you take the top off, a sturdy USB plug is exposed. The kit comes with a USB extender cable that can be used to extend the reach of the drive. I don't know why you would really want to carry it around with you everywhere... I am happy with just taking off the cover and plugging it directly into your computer. If your USB port is in the back of your computer, you might prefer the extension cable.

Transferring Files Simply

The speed of the read/write functions of the drive were particularly fast. I was able to transfer a 3.5 meg MP3 without a problem, and opening word documents was stress free. Under Windows XP, the DiskGo! will appear as a plug and play hard drive in My Computer. For Windows 98, a driver will be needed. The kit comes with a CD that contains the driver. If you own Windows 98, you should really get a new operating system, but that's a whole new topic...  But seriously, for 98 you will need to use the included CD to install a driver. Once this is done, you will be able to use the drive normally. It might be smart to save the driver files in your email account, so just in case you meet up with a Windows 98 operating system, you will be able to use the drive.

In order to help you know when it is safe to unplug the drive, there is a little red light on the side of the unit.

When the DiskGo! is first plugged in, the light is a steady red color. While transferring files back and forth, the red light will flicker. When there is no light on, you will know it is safe to unplug the DiskGo! from your computer. Smart thinking.

Security on the EDGE Memory Flash Drive

If you are one of those neurotic people that always worry if there files are safe, EDGE Memory was nice enough to include a simple and sweet little program that will help you protect all of your data.  Its called USBDP, and it is a small application that can set a password for your device. You will need this small program on whichever computer you are trying to connect to if you have set a password on the drive.

Peripheral DiskGo! USB Flash Drive

There is no install needed, its simply a shortcut that you click on and it launches up. When I tested a password with Windows XP, everything worked great. I plugged in the drive, and then I launched up USBDP. I clicked 'Unlock' and typed in the password. Amazing! An explorer window launched up displaying all the files I had saved. Just like the driver, its best to keep a copy of this small app saved on your email in case you need to get at it.

Overall

For the most part, I was very satisfied with the EDGE Memory DiskGo! USB Flash Drive. It is very compact, and connects to your computer easily. The kit comes with everything you need, and I found the security app to be quite easy to use. My only real problem with the unit is that it's metal clip feels a bit plasticy and I always think its going to pop off because it constantly moves back and forth if you push on it to hard. Other than that, nice work EDGE Memory!
