EDGE Memory DiskGo! 128 MB Watch
Back in the 1950s when computers were as big as rooms, personal data storage wasn't even a gleam in scientist's eyes. Now in 2003, we have many devices used to carry around our documents that can fit in our pockets. One of the coolest of these pocket hard drives is the EDGE Memory DiskGo! 128 meg watch.
How the EDGE DiskGo! Watch Works
The watch uses an attached USB cable to connect directly to your computer. The watch acts as a removable drive that you can copy, cut, and drag and drop files onto in windows explorer. The USB cable is wrapped inside the watch's band. If you look at one side of the band, there is a silver strip running down ending at the fastener. The other side is just black. If you push the fastener forward, you have the ability to take the USB cable slightly out and connect it to a computer. The USB plug inside the watch is only about two inches long, but the package comes with an extension cable that extends the length of the USB cable to about 6 inches.
Under Windows XP, the watch is a plug and play device and once plugged in, is automatically recognized. For Windows 98 operating systems, there is a CD that comes with the watch. This CD contains a driver that once installed, allows Windows 98 to recognize the watch as a flash device. Since the DiskGo! watch installs so easily, it is a great product for hardcore computer nerds and the typical know-nothings.
There is a little red light where the nine hour label would be. When you are transferring files back and forth, this light will blink rapidly. When the watch is simply connected to the computer, it will slowly blink red. This indicator helps you to know when your file transfer is complete and when you can unplug your watch.
Simple Software for the EDGE DiskGo! Watch
The DiskGo! watch comes with a neat little program called U-Storage. From here, you can create a password that needs to be entered in order to access some parts of your drive. You can partition the drive into a 'public' and 'secure' sections which essentially create two removable drives in My Computer. In order to access the secure drive, you need to enter the password and have the U-Storage software installed. You can set how much space to allocate for each drive, so your partitions can be fit to your needs. This program is very easy to use, and if there are private files on your hard drive, it is great to make them secure and inaccessible.
Design and Comfort
The watch itself has a silver metal ring around it with a dark blue colored face. The numbers and tick marks are outlined in silver, and on the face's outer rim, there are tiny tick marks to represent seconds. The red light takes the place of the nine o'clock label, which I was a little upset about. The only labeled hours are twelve, six, and three.
For the rest of the hours, there are only tick marks. I think a better design would be having all the numbers labeled, and the red light be more in the center of the device. One thing I didn't like was the fact that there was no backlight. If you were in the dark, there is no way to read the time. The watch also does not include an alarm, which is a little annoying.
The watch features a plasticy band. Even though it isn't leather, it still is comfortable. There are 8 different size holes, but I found that on smaller wrists, the DiskGo! watch will be too big. For all other bigger wrist sizes, the watch will feel and look great. The watch doesn't weigh your arm down, and feels comfortable in any type of activity. You can even go swimming for up to 100 meters down and your watch will be protected.
Overall
For the most part, I have found the EDGE Memory DiskGo! 128 meg watch to be an excellent product. It installs easily, has a great concept, and looks great. The only major downside is the actual functionality of the watch itself.
