Crazy Taxi

Crazy Taxi

Crazy Taxi, the infamous Dreamcast game, was played over and over and over again by the people who actually had a Dreamcast console. That all sounds good, but there was a problem. The people who played the game were mindless Dreamcast lovers, and not us loyal computer gamers.

So for what feels like an eternity, Crazy Taxi has finally ported to the PC. Once I found out, I was happy, yet a little hesitant. I mean, a port this late has to be good, right? Well if not, than I think I'm going to get pretty mad….

Menu and Option Editing is Similar to Dreamcast

Menu selection and changing game options is, unfortunately, similar to the Dreamcast console system. Once you get past the annoying Sega starting screen, you go to the main menu of Crazy Taxi. The modes of play are: arcade, original, and crazy box. You can also modify your profile from this screen. To my disappointment, you cannot edit options while inside the game, or when you just launch up the .EXE file. You have to put the disk in, click ‘Play Crazy Taxi' and than from there edit the control, resolution, and detail settings.

Arcade and Original Mode

In arcade mode, you play the original version of the game.

Crazy Taxi

You have 45 seconds to find a person, load them up in your car, and than are granted extra time to deliver them to their destination. You do this until your time runs out, so the amount of people you can deliver is practically endless. In original mode, you can drive for 3, 5, or 10 ‘Crazy Minutes.' This mode is the same as arcade, but your time limit is set to 3, 5, or 10 minutes and no more.

The Two Game Clocks Don't Match

One thing I have found to be very annoying is that if there is only, lets say, 5 seconds left, the person you are delivering can still have 45 seconds left before he jumps out of the car in anger. Let me explain: there are essentially two clocks within the game. Your actual amount of time left to play, and the amount of time left before your person gets mad and jumps out of the car.

Getting Money as a Driver

Each person can give you three different ratings: speedy, normal, or bad. If the clock reaches zero before you are at a dead stop at their destination, the person will jump right out of the car and you won't get your fare money. You can jack up your fare earnings by doing combos like crazy drifts, crazy jumps, and crazy throughs. You can also get more money by weaving through cars and jumping over them. The environment of the game has many chances for cool moves like this.

Overall

Overall, the game itself is not much of a big improvement from the Dreamcast version, but people who loved it on console might find something here they could enjoy too.
