Emergency Fire Response
Honestly, when I first saw this game I had a feeling it was stupid and that after a few minutes I would be thinking, “Where did that Halo disc go”... Well, I was in for a rude awakening, for when I opened the Emergency Fire Response box, a game with graphics, gameplay, strategy, and detail, came out; knocking me flat out. Sometimes setting hopes low can be a good thing…
A Look at Firefighters
I always thought firefighters were cool, but never really considered the amount of work it takes to be one. Besides being tons of fun, Fire Response shows the strategy and planning involved with the firefighting profession. Station 615 has left you in charge of operations, and as commander it is up to you to see that local fires are put out. The single player missions, the only type of games to play, include over 10 levels, each with their own unique missions. These missions are all very different and some even have secondary tasks, little things that make the game ever changing and exciting. For example, the first mission was believed to be caused by arson, so a task of your firefighters was to look for any clues that may help the investigation. Firefighters, not surprisingly, are the basic unit of this game, and most missions require the use of them. Other specialists are thrown in there now and then for some added gameplay and fun, along with basic rescue vehicles like ambulances.
Realistic Action
Emergency Fire Rescue was also surprisingly very realistic, with all types of hazards around every turn. Electrical fires, chemicals and explosives are all over the place in all of the unique fire rescue maps. Ranging from nuclear silos to banks, each mission is set in a different location than the last. Throw in the varying tasks, units, and hazards make this game ever changing and rather deep.
Get Used to the Camera
The whole game is set in an odd overhead style camera view, which at first is cool, but becomes very annoying after a while.
Units are hard to control around turns, and fires don't tend to wait until you're prepared to unleash your wrath. However, if you are used to such camera views or don't mind, this is something that probably won't bother you.
Scripted Missions are too Scripted
Sometimes, missions would be too well scripted. Everything would be done automatically for you, and you could just sit and watch. If you get lucky, you will have to do something as simple as moving in order to trigger the next scripted event. These missions don't happen a lot... and that's a good thing.
Overall
All in all, Emergency Fire Response was a short but sweet game. On top of the fact that it is actually a good game, it is cheap! Currently, it retails for about $20. With an ever-changing environment and heart pounding action, this game is great... as long as you don't burn up in panic.
