Games that have come out for computers lately have all been the same: insane graphics with tons of weapons and killing. Fortunately, JoWood has provided us a breath of fresh air from the doldrums of new computer games. Although not ranking high in graphics and other categories, Hotel Giant is one of the few games left in its category. The Sims had a long run, but that's all over now. Hotel Giant provides the gamer with an experience hardly seen in games today.
Single player was really a blast when I first tried it. Your mission is to build hotels that tower over the landscape and bring in tons of customers. With over 19 different options on how to make your hotel look, this area had nice variety to make me keep designing more and more hotels. After this, hotel name and other appearance features become available. All of these nice functions eventually lead up to the actual beginning of the game. Much like the Sims, gamers build and design their hotel, customizing every part of it, from floor color to the pictures on the wall.
Never in my life did I imagine designing a hotel could be so complex, because this game offers you about 600 different decoration ideas. That is more than what I know to do with; all of my hotels couldn't look the same if I tried it seemed. Having so many options really is great because it allows for variety during different games and really gives an impression that the game can't get old. And if you thought all of these decorations were too much, the game also offers many other character controlled functions, including staff, prices, and customer service. Designing a hotel and then choosing people that fit it the best…what could be more perfect?
When the game started, things were looking pretty bad, and I feared that I wouldn't have a chance to fix my hotel. Fortunately, JoWood has enabled the function of temporarily closing your hotel to make repairs. So I fired my cooking staff, lowered the prices, and we were all good once again. Then, customers started coming in and offering suggestions and sometimes negative comments. Using this, I was able to customize the hotel even more, often having certain people come back with the preferences met. These people were also the ones who then spent more money! Customers who liked the hotel also rated it well, and therefore I moved up in the number of stars, which allowed the production of additional types of designs to add. All in all, the building of the hotel, along with all the editing and upgrading one can do is really fun. Building hotels really can't get any better unless it's not a video game.
Campaign modes in these types of games aren't exactly why people buy them, but Hotel Giant somewhat surpassed its predecessors. Different campaigns needed one to repair, change, or crate different facilities in preexisting hotels. Not too shabby, based on my experiences with other games, but games like Empires: Dawn of the Modern World will still draw customers for their superior campaigns.
Hotel Giant is definitely not the best game you can buy today, but it is a break form the usual. Building a hotel and customizing it can be a lot of work and fun if you are up to it. Don't expect too much for a campaign, but if you are in the mood for a fresh management sim, give Hotel Giant a try.
