Most of the games that revolve around war in the computer game world focus on World War II. In Iron Storm, the developers take a new approach, and focus the game solely on World War I.
It turns out that even though Iron Storm is a World War I game that is odd enough, the plot itself is extremely twisted. World War I has never ended, and you are a veteran who has been fighting for the Allied Forces. You are to infiltrate a German base and go through all types of obstacles, (like the infamous trenches) to get some new high tech weaponry that could give the Allies the edge on the war.
The game is definitely a realistic one. Your character (James) cannot carry every single weapon known to man. You can see where he places all the weapons you have acquired: on his back, his chest, everywhere. Once you cannot carry any more weapons, you will have to drop one that you have in order to pick up a new one. But however, you cannot drop a small weapon to pick up a big weapon. In addition to this, head shots will kill you in one shot on the Normal and Realistic difficulty settings.
Everything in the game is very detailed, and it all looks like a World War I setting. The trenches are great; with helicopters flying over you and all different types of supplies to jump over.
Snipers and other enemy units in the game can be a real pain to kill, because it is often very hard, regardless of your difficulty setting. This can make the game very annoying because you will have to do many parts all over again, even though there are in-game saves.
The pace of the game is very nice, and has its gun paced action in the right place. There are some nice puzzles in the second half of the game, but those can get a little too overwhelming after awhile.
Multiplayer would be fun, but there are lot of laggy gameplay issues. There are almost no dedicated servers. There are 4 multiplayer modes, but it is almost the same as single player except for a few settings and weapons.
Even though the game itself is a little short, people will probably enjoy the realistic parts of the game.
