You might remember playing Metal Gear Solid on your console. Then you might remember playing it's sequel, Metal Gear Solid 2, on your console. But now you can play Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance on your PC. And what's better than playing a game on a computer? Nothing.
Substance is in short a port of the PS2 game. There are a couple of issues with the PC version because of this. If Konami had taken the time to make the PC port at least meant for the PC, this game might be able to get a rating a solid 10 points higher.
For one, the controls are damn impossible to map. Instead of having controls be named like a standard game (crouch, jump, etc.) buttons are called L1, L2, or L3. You might recognize these buttons as the ones on your typical PS2 controller. If this is the case for you, you might be able to translate the buttons into PC language. If not, get ready to use a lot of trial and error.
And don't think the manual will help you. Konami didn't even re-write it to fit the PC.
Overall, however, we found out that the best config for the buttons was with using a gamepad. After I plugged in my Wingman Cordless Rumblepad, I was able to play a lot better than with the keyboard.
Other then the messed up controls, the game will not work with a RADEON graphics card on release. Sounds pretty messed up, huh?
Other then that, the game is great. Graphics are nice, and maps are very detailed. Just like in the console versions, the game will keep you playing. Missions are varied, and you will completing objectives in different environments.
Enemy AI is also very nice. Enemies respond great to your alerts, and its way cool to take them out with your fists and that killer kick.
Playing the game has never been better. I can't tell you how much I love Metal Gear Solid 2; it's one of the best games of all time.
The missions are brilliant, the detail is amazing, the graphics are one of a kind, and the game itself is just pure genius. The story really gets you involved. Its not your typical shoot 'em up game. That's what I love it so much.
There is also a ton of video cut scenes, which you are sure to enjoy. These will bring you up to date on the plot, and this will make the game more interesting.
You can play the game in both first person and third person mode. You will often prefer third person, because you can see everything better. And besides, in first person mode, you can't even move. Poo.
Overall, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is an awesome title for the PC. It's just those stupid little quirks that bring this game down. Crappy controls, and no support for the RADEON cards? Argh, one good game that could've been oh so much better.
