Midtown Madness -page 2-

Midtown Madness

When you play a multiplayer game, you chose a net name (basically the name that will be displayed when you play) and than either host or join a game after choosing your connection type. When you play multiplayer, all the single player modes are available, and you also get one extra (my favorite): COPS AND ROBBERS. In a cops and robbers race, you choose a free for all, Cops Vs. Robbers, or Robber Teams. In these different modes, you choose if you want a free for all, a real cops versus robbers game, or a game in which there are two robber teams that play against a computer controlled cop team. In order to capture gold, you run your car through a gold symbol and than deliver it back through a checkpoint like banner which is either the bank (for cops) or the hideout (for robbers.) You can set a game limit that limits either your time or points (I like to play without a limit.) In all of these multiplayer modes, you can change the weather settings.

Graphics, Sound, and Map

All of the graphics in Midtown Madness look outstanding on a nice system. With my Pentium III 933 MHz, 256 RAM, and GeForce 3 64 Meg video card, the game looked great on all the highest settings. I also played the game on a Pentium II 288 RAM, 2 Meg video card system, and lowered all the settings. The game looked OK, considering I had a 2 Meg video card. The sound is very cool, and there are some unique songs (with no words) to keep the game exciting.

Midtown Madness

The sound effects are also very good. Whenever you crash your car, realistic dents appear and if you have a steering wheel with force feedback, you feel your engine dying.
Little features like the ability to drive through small malls, knock down mail boxes, have pedestrians jump out of the way of your car, destroy cities, and always be able to get another car really make this game stand out. Even the map that you use is highly detailed, and is nice to read when you are going 150 through Chicago.

Overall

Overall, Midtown Madness is a great game, and has some excellent features. Even though it is a bit old, it still looks great and you won't believe the fact that it was made a long time ago. For any person who is looking for a car game that is not as serious as something like a Need for Speed game, Midtown Madness is a great choice!
