Medal of Honor: Spearhead, is the expansion pack that Allied Assault has been waiting for. This game has got it all. Just in the first opening three minutes, your parachuting group is thrown off a plane into the sky, and you are amid the smoke, planes, falling men, and the gun fire. Harnessed to your parachute, you watch the earth come closer, until you finally land in a house. After killing the soldiers that occupy it, you fall into a river, kill a few more guys, and take control of an AA gun. Once you meet up with your allies, they give you your first awesome new weapon, the Sten Mark II. This gun it great. With its rapid fire, you will be able to take down the next batch of enemies from long range in a field. The game follows a pattern similar to this, and you will never stop having fun.
Like always, the AI of your teammates and enemies is excellent. Enemies will throw grenades when you and your Allies are grouped together, they will move back and forth in order to try and miss your gunfire, and they will use appropriate guns in different situations. Your teammate's AI is also very good. One thing I liked was that in the midst of a huge gun fight, you would hear each teammate yelling commands to one another. There are a few things that could have been improved. For example, when I was rushing through the open field to storm the location of the enemies, my teammates would lag behind me, even though we had already cleared the area. Sometimes they would run directly in front of my gunfire. Not a good way to win a war, guys… Throughout the entire game, there were only a couple of AI problems. Occasionaly, my men would run the opposite way of me. Even though this only happened a couple of times, it should still be taken care of.
Like I said before, there are some great new weapons. You will be able to use the Webley Revolver, Lee-Enfield, and I love the British Enfield Mark 1. You will also get to use smoke grenades, which will help you out along with regular grenades when you have to infiltrate a room full of guys.
The gameplay you will find in Spearhead is truly wonderful. Surprise after surprise will keep you playing, and you can always expect that whenever you see a AA gun, Nebelwerfer, or any other heavy machine firing weapon, you will always be able to equip it and shoot until there is not one man standing.
Another thing that always will impress you is how much a single event can affect your game. For instance, once you complete the object to blow up a radio control station, you make a hole in the shed in order to go onto the next part of the game. When you shoot a German standing on a balcony, he falls off the deck, making a hole in the wooden fence. This is your opening to the next area. You will also love all of the German signs and shouts and commands from both sides which really make the game feel authentic.
One thing I did not like was the skip around in plot. At first, I was a parachute troop in Normandy, and then I get switched to a winter scene as an American deep behind enemy lines. If you can keep up with it, good for you, but I sure can't.
Overall, Spearhead is a decent expansion pack for Medal of Honor. It gives you more of what you want, and just needs a patch to help with its sometimes finicky AI.
