PROS

Falling from the sky is pretty cool… for a few seconds.

LOWS

There are too many to sum up into a sentence. Read the review for the whole list.

OVERALL

When a WWII game actually comes up with a box saying "Now you're ready for adventure!" you know you're in for trouble.

Beyond Normandy: Assignment Berlin

Beyond Normandy: Assignment Berlin

My most memorable moment of Assignment Berlin: making a family tree for all of the identical soldiers in the Russian camp. Or maybe it was standing in front of a German soldier and waiting for him to start shooting at me. Or maybe it was standing behind a wall listening to Germans yelling the same phrase I couldn't understand. But then again, I really liked to take a walk through a German forest while jumping up and down to avoid enemies. Regardless of what my favorite part was, it's needless to say that there were many. That's why Assignment Berlin receives the lowest rating I personally have ever awarded to a game.

My Killer First Mission and the "Storyline"

To tell you the truth, I can't really tell you about this game's story. There is no opening video, no briefing, no nothing. The only thing you have is a two sentence summary before each [cough] [cough] mission. So for my first ‘mission,' I was to jump out of a plane and then use my arrow keys to land properly. Even though there was no sign whatsoever of the plane being damaged, I made my descent down. The descent down was probably the best part in the game. Seeing the clouds and the land below actually was really cool. The only stupid part was that there was an arrow in front of me which I had to follow. It would be a lot better if it was a controlled fall like in the beginning of Medal of Honor: Spearhead.

So after this first mission, I found myself running through a German base jumping up and down to avoid enemies. Sure, I probably could've shot them, but running away was a lot more fun. Once I ran far enough away, a Russian base just… appeared. I walked inside the huge complex, and then some of the game's more stupid parts set in.

The Russian Base Camp was Filled with Clones!

For one, EVERY SINGLE SOLDIER (besides the main General) IS IDENTICAL. See the screenshots… I took pictures of three ‘different' soldiers. As you can see, they must be identical triplets or something, and there were still about five more twins hanging around.

Beyond Normandy: Assignment Berlin

Other than that, the Russian General tells me to go to a trench, clear it, and then come back to him. So basically you run to the trench, kill the Germans, run back to him, and then repeat. Over and over. And if you walk up to him, he will give you the same welcome speech he gave you at your arrival. Over and over. At this point, I really lost all hope.

Bad Points Broken Down

Just to enforce the point, I'll give a few more examples of why you really shouldn't buy this game.

Hand - For all of your guns, your horribly modeled hand will change colors. Sometimes it is very dark, and other times it is very white. Some Michael Jackson type of thing? Unsure. There are barely any features on your fingers.

AI - Germans don't seem to care if you are in their base. I could run through a crowd of them, and jump right past a gate to get away. Germans have no skills or tactics. They don't run away, come towards you, or switch weapons. Once in awhile, you may get the little crouch up, crouch down move, but other than that, it's worthless.
