Once Upon a Knight

Once Upon a Knight

Ooohh… creepy music. Weird chanting. Rotating background. Sounds like the beginning of Once Upon a Knight, a very unique, I mean ‘special' RTS/RPG game. Once Upon a Knight is a game that tries to be funny, but in reality is not. If you are one of those Diablo aficionados, read on. If you hate Diablo, select a different review (from this website because we're AWESOME), because Once Upon a Knight basically took Diablo, gave it new graphics, and made it worse. Oh yea, and the old English, that hurts...

The Plot Behind the Madness

Once Upon a Knight is a game that gives you a campaign to follow, or an option of leading a character on a full fledged RPG journey. The game starts out with a cinematic of a young prince, hard at work. A scrawny looking wizard guy comes and watches. With his special magic powers, he knocks the prince out with a flying frying pan, and then before you know it, he's in a cage and can't do anything about it. For the rest of the campaign, I will play as that prince and complete miniscule tasks to prove my royal stature and resume my throne, and then to defend my kingdom against attackers.

Packs of Wolves and Annoying Commentary

One thing about attackers: for the first, very slow part of the game, your attackers will all be WOLVES. These things just don't stop coming. When you, (Prince John) are traveling alone, there will be packs and packs of wolves that run at you. It will take FOREVER to kill them all, and then even more time because each wolf will run off when it is almost dead, meaning you have to run around like an idiot and chase them. Once you get further in the campaign, your enemies will become more sophisticated, like skeletons, minotaur's, or even the freakishly strange looking Pilous Mephitis. The campaign is fine… like I said earlier, it is very slow in the beginning, especially when you need to find every single part of your princely armor to prove that you are the true prince. After that, you will either embrace the campaign, or hate it. I for one, hated all of the annoying voices my units said every time I clicked on. Some examples: “Death is better than eternal shame!!!” “Wouldn't mind a fight…” “We shall not stand for anything the enemy has to offer.”

How the Campaign Plays Out

Imagine all of these little quotes in extremely annoying old English accents said over and over whenever a unit is clicked on. In truth, the campaign is not bad, it is just very repetitive. Since your entire economy is based on cow milk (?) you won't really need to build villagers or concentrate on building towns. A lot of missions will have you defending towns, or exploring new ones. Sometimes, a single campaign mission will take you a long time, because all of your characters can gain back health. I have spent 10 minutes sitting and using my fully healed units to attack trees, while my wounded ones had to stand there and get healed. Unless you have the magic mushrooms or other healing potions, or you are standing in a healing square, this process will take a long time. So my advices for the campaign… try the demo, and if you like it, you might just like the game…

The RPG Mode is Nothing Amazing

Now onto the RPG mode… I studied ‘Nik the Naughty' on his journey as a Barbarian, and then the Pink Ditz of Doom, a sorceress. No matter what character you choose, the RPG journey will be mostly the same, except your character's attack and abilities are a little different. The RPG mode features a nice system that easily allows you to tweak your character's abilities, like their stamina, magic power, and even your bargaining abilities. As I journeyed on as the Pink Ditz of Doom, I kept wondering if she ever gets cold in that tiny bikini and cape. And by the way, the priestess is horrible. She dies when being attack by just one wolf on your first mission. Thus, I found the RPG mode to be pretty boring, however very straightforward. Lead your character on different mission similar to the campaign mode. Here however, you can hold an inventory and acquire different items. If you like Diablo, you might want to try Once Upon a Knight for it's RPG mode.

Overall

So here is my final word on Once Upon a Knight: if you enjoyed playing Diablo, I think you might like it. For those of you who get bored playing RPG's/RTS', I would think twice before getting this one, because even though it sounds fun, you might just fall asleep when you see the next pack of wolves.
