Painkiller
Painkiller is a new FPS game from Dreamcatcher unlike any game I have seen before. Instead of concentrating on strategy, tactics, and variation, Painkiller focuses on pure action. Your object in Painkiller is to kill. Kill, kill. And then some more killing. This can be a good or bad thing. Some people have been waiting for a mindless game where all you have to do is kill every last monster standing. If this sounds like it floats your boat, get ready, because Painkiller will certainly satisfy your hunger for action.
Purgatory Sucks
The storyline is simple. You play as Daniel Garner, a man who is stuck in between heaven and hell after he and his wife got killed in a car accident. Your wife has gone to heaven, and in order to join her, you must defeat the generals of Lucifer's army. I don't know why but you do. A representative from above named Sammeal gives you the offer of fighting for your right to go to heaven and join your wife. Even though you have absolutely no idea what events you did in your past life that has caused you to have to fight for your passage to heaven, you accept the offer. The pain begins. And the killing. And… well the game starts.
Varied Enemies for Interesting Gameplay
You will play through a stunning 24 levels and battle with over 50 different types of enemies throughout the whole game. The amount of enemies you face will seem endless. Each level puts you in a unique surrounding where you face hordes of enemies, only to go onto the next room and face a different horde. Since there are so many different types of enemies, gameplay rarely gets boring. All of your foes consist of horrific monster-like creatures. Some of my favorite were the Evil Samurai's with their flaming katanas, the Psychonun's with their scythes, the Amputee's which climb all over the place and swarm like crazy, and Vamp's, which can grow to be bigger if not mashed up when dead, and throw zombies at you. And believe me, there are tons and tons more. Hordes can consist of the same type of enemy, or a huge variety of different enemies. Aside from Serious Sam, Painkiller is one of the first games to have such an astounding amount of enemies. That scores big with me.
Fighting in Insane Locations
Another aspect about Painkiller that will keep you playing is the variation in level structure. You will be fighting in places you have never imagined. Take an opera house for instance. Where did that come from? I have no idea, but it's awesome! There are cemeteries, museums, open rooms with large arches, domes, and pillars, castles, churches with stained glass windows, and much, much more. Each level is different and unique. Before starting each time, my anticipation level was at its highest. I had no idea where I would be fighting this time.
Graphics are Glorious
To enhance the amazing detail and beauty of the different maps and enemies as well, Dreamcatcher has used the PAIN engine to increase the graphical splendor of the game.
Boy did they do a good job. Painkiller has some of the most beautiful area maps I have ever seen along with some of the most detailed enemies. Look at some screenshots for yourself, just to see how detailed everything really is. You can make out details as specific as band-aids on the heads of amputees along with scars. The lighting effects are just as incredible. When you walk into a room with huge windows and high arches, you will be astounded by the shadows produced. Seriously, Painkiller is one game that has got its graphics right. If you are not into the explosive action, get it for the graphics.
