Project Gotham Racing 3

Project Gotham Racing 3

XBOX 360 delivered huge hype in its entrance into the gaming world. All it needed was a game to match, and PGR3 was it.

Project Gotham Racing 3 is the first simulation racing game for the XBOX 360. The game has over 100 cars to choose from all detailed to the T. There are 3 main modes in PGR3: Gotham TV, Gotham career (this includes online career and single player career) and online.

Become Famous! Gotham TV

Gotham TV allows you to watch the best racers in the world compete online. Some of the best things about Gotham TV are that you can appear on it if you join a game with other gamers in the professional ranking. When I played on Gotham TV I found the game to take on a whole new intense and competitive feeling. Another cool thing about Gotham TV is that you can earn XBOX 360 gamer points by watching races. However sometimes it takes the realism out of the game because some people just crash into one another and ruin the race. Also if there are “noobs” in the race a lot of prestige in the whole idea of Gotham TV is lost because of their low skill level.

Get Serious: Gotham Career Mode

Gotham Career has two different modes: online and single player. In the online mode you will be able to join ranked races depending on the class of your car. For instance, if I wanted to race the Bentley Continental GT in the online career mode, I would join the class E section. There is also a PvP mode which is always fun, because you will be racing someone new with different strategies and skill level each time. Every time you win a race online your skill level goes up, eventually reaching the professional level. Playing online for points is really difficult- though you may start off caring about your rating, in the end it's really just about having fun. On the other hand, single player career mode is composed of “style events” and racing events. Style events involve cone challenges, speed challenges, drift challenges, and overtake challenges. In my opinion, style challenges are the hardest because they involve more concentration and have more difficult tasks. I think the most exhilarating and exciting style challenge is the drift challenge because it doesn't use the tuned style drifting cars. Instead, you will be drifting in elegant cars like the Ferrari Enzo and Lamborghini Gallardo. Racing challenges are basically the same old same racing scenario: about 4 opponents, 2-5 laps and the whole chibang.

The Great Society? PGR3 Online

PGR3 was the first game I got for my XBOX 360, so it gave me a great sense of how future games were going to be on the new XBOX Live. From my observations, I have come to the conclusion that the new XBOX Live games are going to be simply amazing. The first time I entered a race online, I was sweating from the intensity and realism. However as time passed by and more people got the 360, the online mode started to get repetitive and really annoying. The reason I say this is because usually when you have an online race with 4 or more people, there's always someone who starts crashing into everybody and ruins the whole race. Basically, this mode good be a Godsend, or people can just go out of their way and ruin it. It's up to you, XBOX gamers.

The Details Are What Counts

The tracks in PGR3 are some of the best I have seen for awhile because of their location and detail. There are 5 cities: London, Tokyo, New York, Nuremburg, and Las Vegas. I found the best and most accurate to be New York (It's not because I'm a New Yorker, trust me). The reason I say this is because driving on the Brooklyn Bridge and seeing all of downtown in my Ferrari Enzo is a gorgeous thing, especially on my HDTV. The detail in buildings and locations is just amazing. One of the best features in PGR3 is the in car view. Originally being a PC racer, I miss the in car view from games like Midtown Madness and Pro Race Driver, however PGR3 does this view perfectly. The outside of the cars in PGR3 are perfectly detailed and they have an interior to match.

Overall

I have played this game on SDTV and HDTV. To sum it up, it obviously looks better on the HD, although it still looks great and gives the PC a run for its money on SDTV. PGR3 shows the potential of the new XBOX, and delivers a great sense of the sick gaming to come ahead. Racing fans, this one's for you.
