Serious Sam: The First Encounter
Whew! That was close! Those guys with no heads almost came and charged me to death.
Ahh... a typical setting for Serious Sam.
Back2Basics
Serious Sam takes place in Egypt. Every little environment monument in the game is Egypt related. There are sphinx statues all over, and everything revolves around sand and grain.
There are 19 different monsters that you will battle, and each of them is different and crazy. The Werebull, for instance, will charge at you at full speed and send you flying in the air. The guys without any head (called Beheaded Kamikaze) have bombs for hands that explode once they reach you, while their ear-splitting scream gets louder the closer they get to you. When they explode, they hurt your health, but also kill themselves.
Sam's Got a Sense of Humor
While all of these crazy monsters (sometimes there are hundreds of them at a time) come charging at you, Sam will often say something with humor to it, like "Now that's a lot of bull" when the Werebulls are charging at you.
Great Music Tempo Changes
The music has something to do with the game, which I really like. Based upon the presence of monsters, the tempo will change it's pace.
Varied Weapon Selection
Once you hear that music, you are going to have to pull out some weapons. Serious Sam comes with 10 weapons that can do an amazing amount of destruction. You have the standard rocket launcher, grenades, heavy laser gun, machine funs, shotguns, and a knife, but you also get a cannonball launcher, which is the most fun of all. You fire it, and it will basically roll over anything in it's way.
A Variety of Areas, but Not a Ton of Detail
There are 13 different areas that you will travel through in the game, and the graphics in each are great.
One thing that I didn't like however, that most of the maps were made out of wide open areas, and were not covered in detail. A lot of levels featured large plazas with a few big statues, but there should have been much more detail.
Great Multiplayer
Multiplayer is great. The cooperative play mode is awesome, and it has been something I have been waiting for. You can play the full game with up to 16 people over a LAN connection or over the internet. You can even play a split screen multiplayer for local area action and fun. In addition to that, you can play in a deathmatch mode, but sadly, there is only one map for that.
Overall
Overall, Serious Sam is a great game that deserves buying. Especially considering its price.
