I really don't know about you, but when I think of computer games, stuff like Warcraft or Freedom Fighters come into my mind. Sim games, well, they're ok but not that addictive it seems. Yet when I saw this title, combining golf and the Sims, I wanted to play it just for fun. What I got was an impressive surprise…
Unlike other Sims games, Sim Golf combines 3 different styles of gameplay: Championship, Sandbox, and Standard. None of these versions are incredibly difficult to pick up, and all seem rather fun after you realize what's going on. The first version, Sandbox, involves the gamer creating a golf course with no money to worry about and hardly any standards to follow. The good part about this function is that it gives a player a chance to get familiar with the game. No more wondering what to do about what has to be done, because everything can be learned in sandbox.
The “Real” course building of the game is during standard mode. Here, golfers choose from a plethora of courses situated all over the world and build their own 9 or 18 hole course. Certain courses can be built the first time you play, and the other better ones require certain in game goals to be accomplished before they can be purchased. This was cool, but got very annoying as I tried to get new courses and always failed. Anyway, building courses is really fun because of the wide variety of decisions and choices one has. Ranging from building buildings to adding ponds here and there, anything goes on your course. The total power you have is rather fun, because you can finally make par 800 holes, aggravating even the best of all golfers. Lastly, as courses get better and approved by the Sim Golf Association, tournaments can be held on your course! This is cool because your money will skyrocket, but the worth of your course can rise as well, and sometimes, even your personal character can play, leading us to the last part of Sim Golf: Championship mode.
Championship mode brings the golf game directly to the gamer.
With this feature, you can challenge other golfers that come to your course, and sometimes even make a little bet to see who will win. The game is more of a challenge now to build fun, challenging, and beatable courses, as well as being able to know what clubs and swings to use for what. Due to all of these factors, Sim Golf is a fun game that has the subtle undertones of being rather challenging and difficult.
Along with all Sims games is the amazing feature of controlling the characters and even listening to them speak.
Once again, Sim Golf has given us the option to customize golfers that come to our course, a part of the game worth more than everything else. Unfortunately, the sounds these golfers sometimes make can get on your nerves, driving you to the extreme of turning off your sound.
The one rather major flaw of the game was the large amount of bugs present. Most of the flaws are present in designing the course, as oftentimes tiles or pathways tend to not show up after you have placed them. The major flaw that actually affects the gameplay is when certain tees appear not to be recognized as a fairway tee. Due to this, only your character is only allowed a certain number of shots, but the computer is unaffected. This just means you will have to work harder for that championship trophy to buy that new course J.
