SOF2 is one of the most violent games I have ever played. Let me take that back: it is the most violent game I have ever played. At least Grand Theft Auto is somewhat comical. This is not. At all.
You are John Mullins, a weapons specialist, anti-terrorist mercenary, and a “Military Consultant”. You start off in Prague passing as an Irish shoe salesman in order to get some info about your mission: Neutralizing terrorists around the globe in order to protect the world from a plague that will destroy humanity. Talk about a lot of responsibility. As you walk past the first dark alleyway in the beginning of the game, you hear 2 guys talking. You lean out, and see 2 guys with AK's in yellow rain coats. You use your weak pistol to fire one off, and then the other. Collect their AK's, and continue on. You have just begun your journey on the most violent path you will ever take.
You will have soon to learn that the knife is the most bloody and violent way to kill an enemy.
You can throw the knife at somebody, or sneak up to them and slit their throats. If you are really mad at somebody, this may be a good way to take your anger out by not harming any real living person. Hell, you could sit there for hours chopping away at some dead guy, and maliciously watch as their arms, legs, head, and even their nose are chopped off and become a bloody pulp.
The amazing graphics of the game help to show the realism. Environments are amazing, and the detail is incredible. Fighting in Colombia is a blast. The jungle environment looks life-life, and from the first cut scene, your eyes will be entranced by the fast-paced gameplay.
Hong Kong is also a blast, with all of the explosives and great animations of enemies. Throughout all the levels you will find little surprises that will really make the game worthwhile.
The AI you will encounter is very good. Enemies will hide, call for help, and throw grenades in order to get rid of you. There were some instances however, when an enemy would run right past me, or reload in plain sight. This makes the game less realistic, but gives the player a break from the often intense gameplay.
The cut scenes from level to level are excellent. Voice acting is great, and character animations couldn't be better. One of my favorites is when you are starting in Colombia and your instructor is talking to you. All of a sudden, a shot sounds through the air, and the man you were once talking to is dead. You must now start your mission by running through the jungles unaware of what you're going to meet.
The weapons you can use are varied. They provide an awesome gaming experience. The M4 has a great grenade launcher, and the AK provides standard machine gun firepower. The MSG90A1 is great for snipes, the OICW is awesome, and you will be sure to enjoy the Micro UZI, M590, and the USAS-12.
Overall, SOF2 is a great game. The graphics, sound, animations and weapons are all great. You will definitely be able to have fun with this game, and the few AI bugs will pass. If you have the stomach, buy it.
