The best (yet extremely hard) stealth game available for the PC.
If there was one word I would have to use to describe Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, it would have to be hard. This game will take you time to complete, because you are going to have to think long and hard about every move you make.
You are an elite solider, part of a program called Third Echelon. You are a lone wolf operative named Sam Fisher, and can only communicate with a remote team through techy gadgets in your missions. When two operatives have gone missing, the agency decides to send you into the Soviet Republic of Georgia. You must find the agents, figure out what's going on, and protect the lives of Americans.
To describe some of Sam's moves, we have a split jump (being able to stay in between two narrow walls by doing a split), jumping down from above onto enemies, and sneaking up on enemies and forcing them to tell you keypad combinations or using their eyes to access entry to places that have reticle scanners.
The only thing some people will hate is the fact that you are so limited in your weapon choice. A lot of people will like the fact that this game is supposed to be played out with stealth, and not to fight your way through any obstacles. For other people, this will be the one thing that you hate the most. Since there are only two guns, (the SC-20K AR assault rifle and the 5.72mm SC Pistol) you will not be doing a lot of gun firing in this game. Since your weapon is "your last resort" most of the game will revolve around getting out of tight situations by using your stealth, being inconspicuous, and using your hands for your minimal amount of combat.
There are plenty of gadgets to play around with. The sticky camera and sticky shooter are great, the night vision headset is the best. You will also have fun with the realistic lock picker, which allows you to actually control the picks to see which one works.
The amazing lighting effects in the game will stun you.
Everything is extremely realistic: the light that hits you through the blind cracks, your shadow, and the amount of light a light switch will give a room. The graphics of the entire game are like this: stunning, and utterly beautiful.
The gameplay is fairly nice. The weapon/gadget interface is easy to operate: you hold down an assigned button, then with your mouse select which weapon you would like to have, and then click another button to take it out. This may seem like a lot to you, but its not. Once you do it once or twice, you will get fairly acquainted, and feel right at home like you do with using a mouse scroll to change weapons.
The only problem I could find with the game was that there was no multiplayer. It would be so cool if you and your friend(s) could play CO-OP missions from the game. Maybe this could be included in an expansion pack...
Aside from a few little bugs (every once in awhile I had random crashes to my desktop for no apparent reason) Splinter Cell is a great stealth game. If you want to take a break from Unreal Tournament and focus on being quick and quiet, Splinter Cell is the way to go.
