If you are in the mood for a funny point and click game, Wanted will definitely satisfy you.
Once upon a time, point and click adventuring in games was a fun new fad. Over time, the freshness of this style of playing faded into oblivion and hasn't been heard much of since. However, with the advent of Wanted, a new face has been painted for point and click fun that strives to bring the genre back to life. Granted, it isn't the best we could find, but it's far from the worst.
The game starts off with you taking the role of our bumbling hero, Fenimore Fillmore. Similar to other themes we've seen here at WeTheGeeks, your job is to be the law upholding cowboy who saves your fellow farmers from the evil big business. Yet Revistronic throws in a nice twist in the storyline: the view of Fillmore on society. It seems as though our character has no problem doing immoral things such as stealing for a girl he loves, destroying property and even freeing people from prison. So despite the seemingly bland storyline, our creators are kind enough to please that rebellious child in all of us.
The missions and quests in Wanted help blend humor, variety, and challenging puzzles all in one. From the first quest involving taking your guns back from the Bannisters' child (people you first save), gamers can tell what's in store for them. The quests are very “common-sensy” and can be solved with simple reasoning, not trying everything humanly possible. However, the few puzzles poorly laid out become a major problem. Certain ones of these problem puzzles even go against the reason of point and click games. Not sounding nit-picky, but throwing in puzzles that aren't well designed and require reflexes/ mouse controlling destroy the slow, peaceful pace of the game.
A similar problem I found involved my horse. The use of a horse in the game is a major plus, but the horse needs to eat. Well, that's ok, but the horse eats A LOT. Many, many times I was forced to backtrack to stock up on carrots. Revistronic added the ability to grow carrots on farms, but this becomes a tedious process that many do not want to do. The alternative, buying them, seems to work but the carrots are a drain on money, and this in turn affects funds for quests. My budget oftentimes has run out funding food for my horse and items for me, which detracts from the enjoyment that I generally get out of this game. There is nothing worse then getting deep into a mission then running out of funds to fuel it.
In terms of graphics, Wanted is played as a cartoonist visual wonderland for gamers.
The round faces and colorful environment help reinforce the childish undertones of the game, while still making it enjoyable for “older” gamers. Characters are all uniquely different, and bad guys are often portrayed in a humorous light. The setting is beautifully rendered, and places Wanted on the same playing field as games with bigger names and insane graphics engines. Cut-scenes and dialogues only get better as the game progresses, and I keep waiting to see how Revistronic will surprise me at each turn.
Considering Wanted is in a genre I really had no love for at first, I was surprised by the outcome of this game. The seemingly silly storyline provided me with countless hours of chuckles to myself and the graphics brightened my mood and day. But on a more technical note, Wanted did have some critical errors that seemed only to be hidden by the smiling cartoon faces of the characters. In the end, I think Revistronic has potential in games to follow, as long as they fix minor problems encountered and keep up the humor.
