Warcraft III
The epic story tale of Warcraft III is one that everybody in the world of PC gaming should know about. The immersion of the plot and storyline provides an excellent gaming experience, along with the amazing 3D graphics and the great interface.
An Intertwined Plot
One great thing about Warcraft III is its twisted plot. Each of the campaigns will unfold as you advance through the different missions. You will start off playing as Thrall, the Orc warchief. You will eventually move onto being Arthas and the humans, and then you will play as the Undead, and finally the Night Elves. Each of these campaigns revolve around the same plot. A prophet will come to each one of the civilization's leaders to tell them that they must move their people west if they want to survive. Your leader will either consider the prophet, or call him a madman. The missions that follow will have you in control of your leader and his/her people. You must complete objectives like destroying ships, building base camps, or destroying an enemy's base. Each of the objectives will have a meaning. You must destroy 5 ships so your army doesn't disband and run away. You have to build base camps in order to prepare for attacks, and must attack enemy camps in order to capture wanted relics, like the Frostmourne sword. Once the human hero Arthas gets control of Frostmourne, the plot will change dramatically.
A+ Cinematics Add to the Detail of the Game
To help you along through the plot, amazing cinematics are included. Before, after, or during every mission, there will be a cinematic using the graphics inside the game. Once a major event occurs, however, a cinematic that has graphics much like a movie will be shown. These cinematics are a lot like what we see in the movie theaters today. Maybe that is why Blizzard has included a DVD with all the cinematics in the collector's edition of the game…
Graphics, Units, and AI
The graphics inside the game are excellent. Everything is in 3D, and all the level maps are vast and detailed. You will have to fight through winter storms, tred through the water, cross volcanic rock, or have a mighty battle in a field of lush green. The things you will fight will range from wolves to goblins. Units are extremely detailed, and they are all different. Each campaign has totally different units, besides the basic workers. Different civilizations will have different abilities, like turning workers into militia for 45 seconds.
Hero units (group leaders) will be able to ‘level up' when they kill enemies. This adds a nice RPG feeling to the game. The higher the level they are, the more hit points and mana they can have. Heroes can also hold an inventory. Each hero has room for 8 items, which they can pick up after enemies are killed. When a hero dies, they can be summoned from an Alter of Kings.
The AI in the game is great. Enemies will attack in different ways, and there are no times when an enemy will run straight at you and basically commit suicide.
Collecting Resource and Controll Population
The resources your workers collect are wood and gold. Gold is found in gold mines, and wood is taken from trees. All your units need to have food. Food is provided through the amount of houses that you have. An average human house will hold 6 food. Each unit can take up more then one amount of food. This will cause a problem, because the better units are often more then 3 food units each. In the campaign, you will often be restricted to a maximum of 90 food units, so you will have to plan your population wisely.
Taxes?!! What is this, Monteral!?
Upkeep is one of the most annoying features. You have to pay a certain tax on your army. There are three levels: none, low, and high. The amount of gold you collect per worker will be affected at each stage. On none, you will get all 10 gold. On low, you will receive 7 gold, and on high, a mere 4. This basically sets a limit on how big you can build your army, because if you try and build your army too big, you won't be able to support future units.
Overall
There is a Battle.net feature in the game, which allows you to play online with your friends. I found this mode very fun, and enjoyed the fast paced action with my friends. The server support was excellent, and I was never stuck in a real laggy pit. Overall, Warcraft III is a real treat. The story will keep you playing, and it will be hard to stop.
