If you have Counter-Strike, do not even bother glancing at this title. Way to disappoint us, Valve.
If you guessed not good, you are correct. The new Condition Zero single player is just about the worst possible attempt of a single player of Counter-Strike I have ever seen. Taking you through an amazing six tours of duty, you will play at 18 different maps. Each Tour of Duty is composed of three maps. Each map is different; however each is the same that you play in multiplayer mode. For each map, you have slightly different objectives to complete. Sometimes you will be required to kill an enemy with a sniper rifle. Other times, this will change to a pistol. And, (this is when it gets hard) you will sometimes have to kill a guy with an assault gun! Imagine that….
Besides using a specified weapon to kill an enemy, you might also have to dare to rescue a hostage. Other than that, there will be a number of enemies you will be required to kill in order to secure the map. You secure the map by completing all the objectives, and also by beating the opposing team at three winning rounds. On multiple occasions, I would find myself completing all the killing objectives the first round. After that, I would spend the rest of the time trying to find the hostages and then find the extraction point. This could go on forever, until either the Terrorists just win while I try to escort the hostages or until I finally bring the hostage to safety after 10 tries. Terrorists win by setting their bomb and not having any CT's diffuse it or by killing everybody. CT's can also win by diffusing the bomb set by the terrorists.
On other occasions, I would complete all of my objectives during the first round, and then have to pointlessly play through two more to secure the map. During the next two rounds, I may end up losing by accident, and have to play even longer… despite the fact that I have already completed all of the objectives.
As you advance from tour to tour, you will get more points you can use to recruit more soldiers for your team. Each soldier costs a different number of points depending on their skill level. When you get really good, you will be able to recruit level 5 guys. Oh yes, I forgot to point out how in-depth the character skills are. For each character, there are three different traits: Skill, Co-op, and Bravery. For each of these skills, a soldier can be ranked from Bad to High. Based upon these in-depth rankings, you can choose who you would like to select for your team. For every mission, you will be able to select a completely different team.
After I beat the single player mode in about an hour and fifteen minutes or less, I was expecting maybe some type of video, slideshow, something to make the game end worthwhile. Instead, I got a screen that congratulated my team on being victorious. You can imagine the sensation I felt after reading this wonderful note. Right after I clicked “Finish,” I was back to the main menu.
If you have bought this game or feel inclined to buy it, get ready for a disappointment. If you don't have it, don't buy it… stick with the original Counter-Strike.
