Dead to Rights

Dead to Rights

I have come to the conclusion that the main thing missing in most all PC games is a dog. We need to be able to use a dog that can attack and kill people. We need a furry canine companion that we can rely on to be there for us when passageways get too narrow, or when we are in trouble and need a paw. I think Dead to Rights has more than satisfied this requirement. Dogs are sure as hell fun to play around with, but pointless and repetitive games are not.

Not the Best Out There...

Dead to Rights is not the best game you can buy at the moment, but it is certainly not bad. It is just not one of the most unique games you can buy. It is fun to play around with for a little awhile, but you need to be pretty desperate to keep playing. In reality, Dead to Rights is more like a bunch of development ideas thrown together to make up some type of game.

Its similar to one of those arcade games you see at a mall and say to yourself, “Damn, that looks cool!” But once you start playing it, you will soon learn that once you have completed a level, the rest of the game will consist of the same elements.

The Story of Jack Slate

You play as Jack Slate, a tough cop trying to protect the screwed up streets of Grant City. Ooh, I'm shaking… Anyway, Jack is called to police duty at a big warehouse. After fighting through hordes of ‘construction workers,' Jack finds his dead father. Now he's really mad. Jack sets out to find the killer of his father, whom he suspects is a guy named Auggie Blacks. When Auggie turns up dead, Jack is suspected as the murder. Too bad for him. He is sent to prison, where you will lead him in his escape and eventual search for his father's true killer. What a crappy story.

Awesome Video

Before entering the campaign, I watched the opening video. Wowsers. Action packed, full of thrill, excitement, and even suspense. Not bad for a 2 minute video. Don't let the video fool you. You will never be completing such tasks inside the actual game.

Odd Job Missions

Why is this? Well, you will be too busy lifting weights, punching a punching bag, or even boxing. One of the missions in Dead to Rights has you collect 25 packs of cigarettes for one nerdy prisoner so he will make you some type of acid to aid in your escape from prison (long story).

When I mentioned that Dead to Rights was a “bunch of development ideas thrown together into a game,” I was talking about all the different things you can do in Dead to Rights. Here is a brief description of its main elements:

3rd Person Action

Unlike today's most popular action games, Dead to Rights has you play in a somewhat annoying 3rd person camera angle. You will only be able to control our faithful hero Jack in this annoying mode. For the most part, 3rd person action is OK when you are running around looking for bad guys. But once you have engaged with a bunch of enemies, it might be hard to look at them all using 3rd person camera. It can also be a pain to try and fiddle with the mouse in order to try and get a good angle.

Slow Motion Dives

Mimicking one of the really good 3rd person action games out there, (Max Payne 2), Dead to Rights incorporates a slow motion feature. If you have a weapon handy, simply hold down your dive button, and Jack will do a dramatic dive in any direction you choose. From this position, you can target any enemy and start shooting away at him. Naturally, the bullet shells flying off your gun and your opponent falling backwards as you shoot him up are some of the really cool parts of Dead to Rights. However, unlike Max Payne 2, once Jack is in the air, his position is set. If your enemy dodges out of the direction your dive is facing, your screwed.
