Freedom Fighters
Placing C4... Bridge Destroyed... Plus 25 Charisma... I live for these words. Just thinking about Freedom Fighters makes me shudder. I love this game. Even though it is simple, it combines almost everything you want in a game into a wonderful under $50 product. Entering state of rapture...
The Story
Freedom Fighters puts you in control of Christopher Stone, a 32 year old New York City plumber. The situation with the Soviet Union has escaladed since 1945, and commie's are installing themselves into governments all over the world. Britain has joined the Communist block, Nukes are set up in Cuba, Soviet military advisors have been sent to Honduras and Guatemala, the Mexican Communist party takes control, and assassination attempts have been made on the US president. Soviet troops are occupying New York City. You and your brother Troy are on a simple plumbing job for a woman named Isabella Angelina. Out of nowhere, Soviets burst in and take Troy away, interrogating him about Isabella. Troy has no idea what they are talking about, and neither do you. Armed with only your plumber's wrench, you make our way out of the building, and see that it is being taken over by troops. You knock out the Soviet guarding the building's prisoners. A man named Mr. Jones starts talking to you, and he leads you safely out of the building. After getting a pistol from a killed Soviet, you make your way forward in search of Troy. After he gets taken away in a helicopter, Mr. Jones takes you to an underground sewer base. He informs you that Isabella is the leader of the rebels, called the Freedom Fighters. Isabella and her followers want to free New York City from the Soviets, and regain US independence and freedom. Once you find out that Isabella is missing, you go on a mission to find her. After finding her and bringing her back to the rebel base, you are appointed as an official Freedom Fighter.
Being a Commander with a Great Control System
Depending on the amount of charisma you have, you can recruit up 12 fighters to aide in your missions. Charisma is earned by completing mission objectives and healing wounded people. Every time you go up a charisma level, you gain the ability to recruit one more Freedom Fighter. You can order each rebel under your command to attack, defend, or follow you. This system is excellent. While you get to control your own character, you also get to be an army commander and order your teammates to scout ahead, cover you, or defend an area. Since each rebel can be given a separate command, you can have five guys to scout ahead, five to defend your position, and two to follow and cover you. Orders are given out by pressing the attack, defend, or group together buttons. In order to tell 10 rebels to follow you, you need to hit the group button 10 times. Even though this may sound annoying, it is the simplest way to implement this excellent control system.
The 3rd and 1st Person Perspectives
Freedom Fighters is mostly played from a 3rd person perspective.
This view is most appropriate for the game, because it allows you to see your troops and their current positions. If you like shooting in 1st person mode, there is a precision aim button that zooms into a first person mode when shooting. This button is very convenient, because it allows you to maintain the field view of your troops and at the same time give you a choice of zooming in for precision shooting.
