Savage
Savage is a game that was destined to be different. I mean, it has created a new category for itself to fit into (RTSS). The Real Time Strategy Shooter category allows you to be a warrior and immerse yourself in great FPS action, or be a commander and build up a base. Does it sound too good to be true? You tell me... Savage is a great all around game. There are only a few problems with it. Is Savage the ultimate game? I don't know about that, but it really adds a new twist to world of PC gaming.
The EPA vs. the NRA
Savage is based around a plot that sounds like an epic story. Life has always been a struggle between man and beast on Newerth. Since both had to compete for natural resources, they each neared extinction. Neither could side could unite and form together. Jaraziah Grimm is a human warrior. Following in his fathers footsteps, Jaraziah follows his leadership instincts and unites all men under one force: The Legion of Man. This group was automatically discriminatory towards the beasts of the world, and decided that humans were better. Jaraziah has a younger sister named Ophelia. Ophelia has always considered herself different from all the other humans. She enjoys being outside with the beasts. She discovered that she has the power to talk to beasts of any kind and communicate with them. Ophelia has been mad at her brother and The Legion of Man since they started to proclaim their superiority over the beasts. Not being able to take the animal abuse anymore, Ophelia runs away and lives in the forest with her beast friends. In time, Ophelia unites all the beasts and creates a powerful force. It is now her goal to fight against her brother and The Legion of Man in order to get back the rights that beasts deserve. In short, you have a human leader who wants to slaughter beasts while his sister the environmental freak wants to protect them. Choose sides to fight to the death and prove victorious.
Launched Right into Savage
Savage is very complex. You are going to need the manual for this one. Once you finish the installation, you are launched into the Savage main menu. As I was scrolling down my options, I said to myself, time to learn how to play an RTSS game! To my surprise, there was no tutorial. The only play option was 'play Savage.' After clicking on that, I was immediately taken to a list of games to join. Whoa... that's moving fast. After picking a random game to join, I entered the world of Savage, a 3D world full of big beasts and Indian like people. Without having a clue what do to, I took my large beast that I selected (there is a menu before spawning that allows you to choose what character you would like to play as, what weapons you want, and what items to carry) and marched around our base camp looking big and mighty. It turns out that even though I look like a human destroying machine, I am not. Those humans have some pretty nice weaponry, turning the fight between beasts and humans to be evenly matched.
Savage Looks Great
Savage looks spectacular.
The graphics are amazing, and the character detail is incredible. When you are running with your pack through the woods, you can just look down to see the beautifully modeled grass. Even the sun shines bright and causes pretty reflections on everything you see. When you play as the Commander in RTS style, all the buildings are 3D and you can zoom in so much that you can see every detail on the units body.
An RPG Twist
The weapon and item interface of Savage has a real RPG twist to it. After you kill somebody, they leave behind gold that can be picked up and used.
