There are few FPS games available that succeed in trying to solely simulate the intense environment of a combat zone relying on team based warfare. Soldner: Secret Wars is one game that has tried to accomplish this. Though it may seem like an incredibly detailed game, Soldner has its fair share of problems that cause it to fall short of the great team based warfare multiplayer game it boasts to be.

Half Time for the US

As for the storyline, the year is 2010, and the US and Russia have decided to keep out of large military activities because of the ethnic clashes and economical problems that result from them. Now that these two nations are done playing the role of “Global Police” (as the game manual puts it) more sects of special force units are coming into play. You will play as a Soldner, a member of an elite group of secret mercenary troops, loaded with high tech weaponry and vehicles. The game includes both a single and multiplayer mode.

Single Player Mode Like Battlefield

Before we delve into the world of team based warfare, we will talk about the single player mode. Single player, just like the great game Battlefield 1942, has a big thing missing. Single player is supposed to be fun, unique, and have some type of a storyline to the campaign. Just like Battlefield, Soldner fails horribly in this category. Single player is composed of random missions, all taking place in different areas all over the world, and offered by different countries. Your objectives are usually to destroy an object, assassinate a person(s), or to rescue a hostage. How unique. These missions are randomly generated, and have nothing to do with one another. Once you log onto a terminal stationed in your home base, you can view all of the available missions, their location, and a brief description about what your job will be. No videos, no real mission briefing screen… Anyway, once you choose a mission you would like to try, you are taken to another base, situated close to your target location.

Outfitting your Soldner is the Best Part

At this base, you can outfit yourself and the rest of your team (if you have one). This is where Soldner is cool. There are TONS and TONS of different weapons, vehicles, helicopters, everything you could possibly need in modern warfare. You should really check out the Soldner website (see homepage link on the left) because they have a list of all the different weapons and vehicles available in the game.

There are tons of weapons to choose from, and depending on the type of combat situation you are going into, you can access which you would like to choose. Your Soldner has five weapon slots, but each is for only one type of weapon. Therefore, you will need to be strategic in what weapons you choose to bring. For instance, whenever I have to destroy an object, I like to use a Panzerfaust 3, Stinger Weapon System, or a LAW 80. For assassinations, it depends how far away you are going to be from your target. When I am planning on sniping, I try to get an SV-98 or a PSG1 to get rid of my target with ease. When I am planning on making a close quarter kill, my weapon strategy could be as simple as using a SOG SEAL knife in “sneak” mode, for a simple stab in the back. For missions where you will be engaging in more open firefights, any type of grenade and machine gun would be ideal. I prefer using MK2 frags with either an MG3 or perhaps a SAW.

Single Player Mode = Practice for Multiplayer

Of course, you can ride to your destination in style, using something as flimsy as a Land Rover to something as intense as a F/A-18 Hornet. By successfully completing missions, you will be awarded with new supplies, and be able to get better equipment than you already have.
